I had looked into what kind of anemone would provide the best host for my maroon clownfish for I picked it up this morning, so I knew there was a good chance on it happening. I never thought it would happen so soon though. I put the anemone in this morning and the clown fish started acting funny. It didn't get too close to the anemone, but it swam erratically a safe distance above it. Then when the day lights when out and only the nighttime LEDs were on did he finally approach the bubble tip anemone.

bubble-tip-anemone 034

At first it looked like the clownfish was nibbling at the anemone's tentacles. Then it started brushing up along side of it. After about a half hour it looked like it was trying to bury itself in the anemone. The anemone was also reacting to the "dance". It was contracting as if it was trying to enclose the clownfish.

I was at the beach last week and thought I'd pick up some new shells for the hermit crabs in my tank. The shells you buy at the shops on the beach are pretty nice and may look a little out of place in my tank, but I thought I'd try one at least. I stuck one in yesterday and this morning it already has an owner. You can see the new shell in the picture. If you look close enough you should also be able to see another hermit crab in his original shell.

Here's a rare shot of my clownfish. He hardly ever stays in one place long enough to get a clear shot of him. This one's not perfect, but it pretty good.

My fish have been in and surviving pretty well for a couple weeks. It looks like I was able to get rid of the ick that was killing my earlier fish. I have been playing around with some settings on my camera to get better pictures. Here are several.

Got a new light which should make it look nicer and provide enough light for the anemone and coral I plan on getting.

current_usa_lighting_metal_halide_sunpod_single[1] The light is a Current USA SunPod. It has one PowerPaq 14,000K HQI metal halide lamp to provide a lot of daylight. It also has both blue and white Lunar Lights mounted on the bottom side of the fixture. There are 6 each and I use them at night.

It's a great light, but the fan is too loud for our living room area. I think it's something like 25db. I've found some replacement fans that can provide almost as mush airflow but only run at 9db. I will have to order one and try it out. The other thing that I wasn't prepared for was the that the amount of heat it gives off made it impossible to keep the glass hood on it. The heat from the light caused the salt water on the tank to dry out on the hood which really looked bad. Plus it kept all the light from going thru it. I had to remove the glass top permanently. Now, because of evaporation, I'm topping off the tank every few days to keep it full.
